MD-11
1991

Varig was
the first airline in Latin America to operate MD-11 aircraft, in
November 1991. These latest generation aircraft started flying
on the São Paulo-Rio-Paris and Amsterdam routes. The MD-11
cockpit is fully computerized using digital systems. The
navigation system is so sophisticated that it uses laser
gyroscopes. The MD-11 is equipped with winglets at the wing tips,
thus reducing aerodynamic drag and saving about 15% of fuel. The
first two MD-11, PP-VOP and PP-VOQ were officially delivered to
Varig on November 12 1991.

BOEING 767 (EXTENDED
RANGE)
1987

Since
March 1987, Varig has been operating Boeing 767-200 ER (Extended
Range) aircraft on the international routes. The first B-767-200
ER, flying directly from the plant, received the prefix PP-VNN.
Varig´s B-767-200 ER are aircraft of the latest generation and
the first to be delivered with General Electric CF6-80C2B2, de
avançada tecnologia, grande eficiência e m engines, of state of
the art technology, with a lower level of fuel consumption. This
aircraft is equipped with the FMSCS (Flight Management System).
The FMSCS has a data bank with all information regarding the
plane´s performance and, when necessary, they can be quickly
relayed to the technical crew. This is one of the most
up-to-date systems in existence to serve the commercial aviation
industry. |

BOEING 737
1974

Continuing the program of renewal and expansion of our fleet,
during 1974 the first four Boeing 737-200 Super Advanced went
into operation, in addition to the DC-10s. The B-737 were
introduced on domestic lines, enabling VARIG to increase the
frequency of its major flights within Brazil, thus providing
additional seats for our clients. The first B-737 Super Advanced,
PP-VME, flew in from the factory in Seattle USA in November
1974. Since then, the company has acquired various series of
this model.
