VARIG was looking for turboprop aircraft to replace the DC-3. VARIG operated a HS-748 in experimental character in 1968 and eventually chose the plane. Ten HS-748, also known as "Avros", started flights in Rio Grande do Sul state, in 1970. Those aircraft also operated the RIN (Rede de Integração Nacional) "National Integration Network", which included routes to Tocantins, São Francisco and Cariri. For some time they also flew the Rio-São Paulo air shuttle. HS-748 Avro was the last propeller incorporated by VARIG.
